Hurry up and wait.

Hurry up and wait.

I am usually a prompt person.  I like to arrive in a timely, orderly fashion.  There is nothing fashionable about being late to me.  Call me nerdy.  I usually get there first, and might be the first to leave.  I am pretty darn exciting for a 26 year old.  Crazy times.

Here in Bend, I am waiting for the start of the Cascade Cycling Classic.  The host housing is amazing, the family is beautiful, and the scenery is breathtaking.  Now what.  Race time yet?  Nope.

Tomorrow at 6:30pm, the race kicks off with a 2 mile Prologue.  Wait all day for a 4minute effort.  Hurry up and wait.  Waiting, waiting, waiting.

It is said that patience is a virtue.  I am not the most patient person, but bike racing has taught me a good deal of patience.  You can’t fast forward your fitness, and you can’t fake rest.  You have to let your body build strength, and allow your body to recover.  Injuries and fatigue take just as much time as power and speed. You also have to wait all day sometimes to be able to do what you do best, race your bike.

Patience.

I firmly believe there are lessons to absorb in every area of our lives.  Bike racing may not be rocket science, but at least it allows for some incredible situations.  It can test your spirit, your will, and your heart.  While we are all in a rush to get somewhere, accomplish something, and do anything, it is good to remember patience.  It is a virtue after all.

Now that I have had my morning coffee, and I still have 36hrs before I race.  Now what?

Time to practice some patience, some relaxation, and some focus.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness” Gal 5:22
